March 2020 Updates

Hello everyone! It’s been quiet over the past few months in the world of competitive Mental Math – so here is a collection of updates from these months:

Upcoming Competitions

You’ll be aware of the disruption caused by the fight against coronavirus. As it stands, all of the competitions scheduled for this year are still happening – but if they get cancelled there will be a notice on this website as soon as possible.

If you’re hoping to attend the August or October competitions, then please apply soon in order to finalize the arrangements, and be understanding if any cancellations become necessary.

Facebook Page

I have a small Facebook Page where I post articles and updates from this website. We recently hit 100 subscribers! If you aren’t following the page yet, click the button somewhere on this page to stay connected.

Calculation Message Board

Ralf Laue (organizer of the Mental Calculation World Cup) has set up a message board to replace the old Yahoo-hosted one.

Video Course on Practical Mental Calculation

To celebrate one year since this was released, my course is currently on sale! I’ve also updated some of the videos with new footage and new training files. Check it out here if you’re interested in learning new methods designed for everyday mental math, such as currency conversions and fast estimation.

Calendar Trainer Online

Katie Kermode (very successful British champion at Memory) has made a new online trainer for calendar dates with Memoriad-style input.

Training Spreadsheets

George Lane (creator of the Pegasus training software) has produced some similar training files designed to be clearly visible on a screen – e.g. for presentations. Find them under “TV-display files” on the Pegasus page.

Junior Mental Calculation Arabic Championship

At the end of 2019, there was a regional mental calculation competition for the Arab world, organized by Hakim Belouad in Algeria, with papers designed by George Lane.

With 98 participants this is one of the biggest competition in the past few years! Entrants were mostly from Algeria but also from Tunisia and Palestine, and math prodigy Geshev from Bulgaria made a guest appearance.
