I’m Daniel Timms – the person behind this website 🙂
I always enjoyed Math—and people used to challenge me sometimes to calculate things for them, like 51 x 51, but I never took it any further.
One evening in 2012, soon after graduating in Pure Mathematics, I started to wonder whether anyone had tried to get really good at doing Math in their heads. How fast could they multiply numbers? Could they solve complex problems like square roots?
After some searching, I discovered that the Mental Calculation World Cup was going to be held later that year – where the world’s top 40 human calculators would compete in everything from multiplications to calendar dates! So I set myself the challenge to train and qualify for the event in less than 4 months.
And my preparation was successful! And just from training smart for a few hours each week. Since then, I’ve competed in all the major international mental math competitions, won awards in categories such as Hectoc and calendar dates, performed on stage, developed new methods and training systems, helped organize the Junior Mental Calculation World Championships, led many workshops about Mind Sports, and coached people from a variety of backgrounds in mental math.
What I’m Doing Now
These days I’m freelancing, providing services in Software and Education. I’m also travelling quite often, so right now I could be in England, Germany or even Colombia 🌏
As well as World Mental Calculation, I have a personal website with more information on my projects – check it out here: Daniel Timms.
