Accuracy Trainer for Square Roots

After understanding the theory, improvement in mental maths comes from specific focused practice. This tool is designed for you to practise inexact square roots to the maximum accuracy possible, racing against a timer.

How to Use this Tool:

  • Ideally use a desktop browser to make input easier.
  • Select the time limit from the first drop-down menu.
  • Select the question size from the second drop-down menu.
  • Calculate the answer as fast as possible when the question appears, writing as many digits as possible before the timer runs out!
  • You can end the timer at any time by hitting [Enter] or the “Go!” button.
  • The tool will check your answer and reveal your accuracy.
    • The accuracy is calculated using a smooth logarithmic function. See the following examples:
    • Correct answer is 700. Your answer is 707. Your error is 1% or 0.01, so your accuracy is 2 digits.
    • Correct answer is 700. Your answer is 700.7. Your error is 0.1% or 0.001, so your accuracy is 3 digits.
    • Correct answer is 700. Your answer is 703. Your error is between 0.1% and 1%, so your accuracy is between 2–3 digits, and in fact would be 2.37 digits.
  • Hit [Enter] or “Go!” again to move to the next question.
