Estimating Multiplications and Divisions

After understanding the theory, improvement in mental maths comes from specific focused practice. This tool is designed for you to practise estimating multiplications, percentages and divisions—one of the most important skills in practical mental math.

How to Use this Tool:

  • Ideally use a desktop browser to make input easier.
  • Select the question type from the drop-down menu. All are equal difficulty.
  • Type an estimate as fast as possible when the question appears, and hit [Enter] or the “Go!” button.
  • The tool will check your answer and reveal your statistics:
    • The closer you answered to the exact answer, the better. In practice, getting 2 digits of accuracy is good enough.
    • Your accuracy increases as you answer closer to the real answer.
    • Your score is calculated as a compromise between answering quickly and answering accurately.
    • The answer block changes colour, only depending on your accuracy. If the box turns a shade of green, your answer was good.
  • Hit [Enter] or “Go!” again to move to the next question.

Further Notes

  • The recommended methods for these questions are the rescaling methods for multiplication and division.
  • You can see improvement in just 5 minutes per day of focused practice.
  • Keep a track of your performance—just like an athlete would—to see improvements and plateaus.
  • These tools are currently in beta mode and and available to students working with Daniel Timms. For enquiries about coaching or the other tools, use the contact details here.
