Junior Mental Calculation World Championship

The Junior Mental Calculation World Championship is organized every year by Caroline Merkel. It is a large and friendly event—the last event had around 80 participants from many countries all over the world.

Next event: October 2025

Competition Details

This Mental Math competition is usually held in Bielefeld (Germany) in Autumn. Competitors must apply directly to Caroline Merkel, as the event has limited spaces. Competitors of ages up and including 19 years are welcome to compete in their category:

  • up to 11 years
  • 12–14 years
  • 15–19 years

All questions are done using pen and paper.

The event includes two days of free expert-led training on all aspects of Mental Math, and sometimes secondary competitions such as cube roots or Hectoc.

Category Details

All participants in this Mental Math Competition sit the 2-hour exam paper appropriate to their age category. The questions are generated mainly by George Lane’s Pegasus software. Here are further details about the 2024 format (and training resources). The papers are designed to be long enough that nobody will finish everything—although some participants do get close!

All major calculation categories are included, such as:

  • addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • exact division
  • irrational and exact square roots and cube roots
  • factorizations
  • fractions
  • calendar dates
  • surprises
